The theory
Understanding membership value.
This calculator helps you quantify the value of a membership slot compared to the revenue from public rounds. It's a crucial tool for setting initiation fees and monthly dues.
/ Models
- Membership Model: Provides stable, recurring revenue (dues) and often higher-margin secondary spend (pro shop, F&B). The initiation fee is a significant upfront revenue source.
- Public Play Model: Fills unused tee times but can be unpredictable and may require ongoing marketing spend to attract players.
- Breakeven Rounds: This shows how many rounds a member must play each month to 'pay for' their dues from a revenue perspective. If they play more, they are providing great value. If less, their value is primarily in the stability of their dues.
Questions, answered
Frequently asked questions.
This represents the direct costs incurred for each round of golf played, such as wear and tear on the course and carts, a portion of staff time for check-in, and amenities provided to golfers. It does NOT include fixed costs like general course maintenance or clubhouse staff salaries.
A good breakeven point is typically 2-3 rounds below the average number of rounds your members actually play. If your breakeven is 4 rounds and members play 6 on average, the membership is a clear financial win for the club.
The initiation fee should reflect the exclusivity and value of your brand, the demand for membership, and your capital needs. It can be viewed as the member 'buying in' to the club's assets. This calculator's LTV metric can help justify a higher fee by showing the long-term profitability of a member.
LTV demonstrates the long-term financial benefit of a member. A high LTV justifies spending more on member acquisition (marketing, sales staff) and retention programs (events, improved amenities) because you know that keeping a member for another year yields significant profit.
